The Making of Fragile Peace

Those of you who visited us at the London Art Fair last week can't have failed to notice Chris Mitton's fantastic new sculpture, 'Fragile Peace.'

Chris hand carved a block of Italian Carrara marble into a 3:1 scale sculpture of the Colt 45 SAA revolver, commonly known as the 'Peacemaker.' It took him 6 months to finish the painstakingly detailed piece, working from a replica of the original gun. These images reveal something of his arduous process and give a wonderful insight into the artist's stone carving method, from stone block to finished sculpture.

Dede Johnston Crowded Slopes

Tobias Till London A-Z at the London Art Fair

TAG Fine Arts is releasing Tobias Till's new box set of linocut prints at the London Art Fair next week. Here's an introduction to the series from the artist himself:

"I had recently completed a print depicting all the London Bridges from the Thames Barrier to Barnes Bridge, showing London in an A-Z format followed on from that. Both ideas take a structured format which set a challenge that inspired me. I enjoyed the play on the conventional London A-Z map book with the task of trying to represent London in pictorial terms with each letter depicting a different place. I started by making numerous lists with some inevitable problem letters and abundance of possibilities for others. I was also restricted to a standard proportion and there were one or two ideas that I needed to change in order to create a composition that worked within that format. I realised that some landmarks such as the London Eye did not need to be singled out as a separate subject since it inevitably appears in the background to many of the other letters. I like the idea that a landmark that is shown from different positions in a number of prints sets up a dialogue between those images and gives an overall spatial impression of the city.

In making my selection I also wanted to give a range of different places. Inevitably there is a relationship between some of the subjects. O for Old Bailey and W for Wormwood Scrubs Prison clearly have a link. I also wanted to show London at a variety of different times of day and weather conditions. This led me to rework the colour of a few of the prints in order to represent a diverse range of atmospheres.

To date all my lino prints have been reduction prints which inhibit much experimentation with colour. This is the first series of prints that I have produced using multiple blocks with each colour being printed from a separate block. The complete series comprises of over 100 hand carved blocks. With the aid of a computer I was able to experiment with different colour and tonal variations before committing to the final printed image."

A wonderful selection of maps arrived in the gallery last week from Justine Smith and Dahlia Elsayed. Justine's maps exploit the beauty of banknotes to explore how money influences our society, while Dahlia's two series of drawings (new in from the USA) are personal recollections of a trip to the Pacific Northwest.

The photos don't fully convey the beautiful colours and composition of these works so make sure you see them in the flesh over the coming months: we'll be showing them at art fairs and The Art of Mapping exhibition (see our full listings here)

Chris Mitton's latest work is an inspired piece of carving. The life-sized sculpture of a crisp packet and eight individual crisps is made entirely out of solid Carrara marble, but looks good enough to eat! This is part of Mitton's 'Revalue' series, where he takes the most unlikely of throwaway items and meticulously recreates them in marble monuments to the mundane.

Robin Duttson has been working closely with TAG Fine Arts and The Curwen Studio to create an ambitious new four-part piece, The Apple Tree.

As a child, Robin would watch the seasonal changes on the apple tree at his parents' farm in Devon. When they moved recently, he wanted to record it. He hand-drew 48 different separations to make up the plates for the prints, working in a wealth of detail.

The final proofs are nearing completion so watch this space for new images and information.

Thank you to everybody who visited us at the London Art Fair. The stand looked fantastic as ever, and our artists received a great deal of well-deserved attention. We were visited by the Art Council England's Own Art tours, and Cai Yuan was interviewed by C Cubed Media, who are working with BBC China to report on the best Chinese contemporary artists represented in London. We managed to get some pictures of him in action...

We're now looking forward to the 20|21 International Art Fair at the Royal College of Art, which runs from 17 - 20 February. We'd love to see you at Stand 38 - contact us for information and to request tickets.

New Artist from New York

Last year, Diana left London for New York City, and we're thrilled to say that we'll be promoting TAG across America in 2011, exhibiting at new US fairs and expanding on our stable of artists.

We're delighted to be working with American artist Paula Scher, whose limited edition screenprinted maps picture the world in dense, colourful detail. Scher is best known for her prizewinning work as a graphic designer, but these beautiful editions showcase a different side to her creative talents. Her work was recently acquired by the V&A and we'll be showing it at the London Art Fair this month.

Adam Bridgland at East Wing Nine (Courtauld Institute of Art)

The East Wing Nine collection at the Courtauld Institute of Art is well worth a visit, not least because Adam Bridgland is one of the exhibitors. The collection, on the theme of 'Exhibitionism,' opened January 22nd. Adam is showing two specially commissioned works - the light installation All Our Riches and a patch called Our Thames Sunset Caught in a Watercolour Wash - as well as the screen print If I was an Actor. The collection is open until 2011, giving you plenty of time to make your way there!

We have just installed Chris Mitton's beautifully carved sculptures in the cabinets of the Zetter Hotel in Clerkenwell. They are hand carved from carrara marble and include the 'Re-valued Series' which recreates life size throw away objects such as coffee cups and coke cans. Allotment, an exciting new group exhibition at The Street Gallery, University College Hospital.
Following on from the success of previous shows SNAP and Black Light, artist Adam Bridgland and UCLH Arts Curator Guy Noble, have collaborated with TAG Fine Arts and brought together twenty-three artists to each create a new wall based work in response to the term 'Allotment'. A full list of artists included in the exhibition is listed below.
All twenty-three practitioners are gaining widespread recognition within the art and design world and exhibit internationally. Many are part of major art collections in the UK and abroad. All the artists produce very different work and their approach to the subject has created a diverse exhibition of works. For a term that could be deemed quintessentially 'English', the exhibition has a cosmopolitan feel. Painting, printmaking, photography, drawing and collage will be showcased. The work will be for sale, with thirty percent going to the UCLH Arts fund to ensure the future development of UCLH Arts projects for the benefit of hospital patients.
