Stephen Walter | The Island Book Signing at the Royal Academy | The World in a Mirror Exhibition | Antwerp

London Original Print Fair Exclusive Book Signing & Meet the Artist
Saturday 25th April | 1 – 2pm | RA Burlington House, Piccadilly | W1J OBD

We're delighted to announce that Stephen Walter will be joining us at the 30th anniversary of the London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy this Saturday to sign copies of his eagerly awaited publication The Island: London Mapped, ahead of its official release on May 1st. This beautifully illustrated book reconfigures Stephen's critically acclaimed sold out map The Island, transforming it into his own version of a London street atlas which enables readers to explore his unique vision of the city by flicking through its pages.

Friday also sees the opening of 'The World In A Mirror' at MAS Antwerp, which features two of Stephen's richly imaginative and detailed maps, London Subterranea and Nova Utopia.

The exhibition presents a journey through the Western interpretation of the world, through 150 unique world maps, globes and objects. Stephen is one of only three contemporary artists exhibited, and his work adds his own distinctive reflections to this fascinating history.

Stylist Fashion Issue | Anya Hindmarch | Stephen Walter

Pick up your free copy of  Stylist Magazine's Fashion Issue today to see Stephen Walter's Hub 2007-2010 behind the desk of the wonderful designer Anya Hindmarch.

In the article Anya says of the work: "I have an enormous picture of London with every single house drawn on by this crazy artist and he's marked every area and labelled it by its type. It's quite funny because London is very much rooted to what I do..."

Stephen's sold out limited edition print is an incredible snapshot of the capital and its art world between 2007-10. We love seeing the collections our artist's work are exhibited in, and it's particularly exciting to see Stephen's work in one of London's best and most prestituous design studios.

Stephen Walter: Final Weekend

After the brilliant reception we have had for our Stephen Walter show, we would like to share some of the reviewers' thoughts with you.
"This is art of the highest order, for it not only looks terrific on the wall, but it also engages the intellect and sparks curiosity. Indeed, it made us want to take part — to excavate that old sketchpad, and start mapping out our own landscapes. A must-see exhibition."
Matt Brown, Londonist
Rachel Guthrie elaborates on the unique use of a hagioscope for Walter’s Nova Utopia, “which hones in on an area of this elaborately conceived new world and magnifies it.”
Rachel Guthrie, Art of England
“Seamlessly interspersing famous landmarks with secret trivia, Walter’s work overwhelms the senses with a wash of visual and textual information.”
Kathryn Murray-Bruce, Square Mile

The Visitors' Guide to Nova Utopia

Nova Utopia is place of dreams! A large leisure island state about 200 miles across, defined by its isolation, its beauty and the immense diversity of its landscapes and resources. As a destination, Nova Utopia sits somewhere between the wonderful, the beautiful, the entertaining, the rich, the sublime and the ridiculous. Despite recent environmental and social concerns, there’s a wonderful array of places to visit, and a tour of the island provides a fascinating insight into this unique and ever-changing country.
[The Visitors' Guide To Nova Utopia]

Stephen Walter's extraordinary map of Nova Utopia revisits Thomas More’s famous fictional island state of Utopia a century after a capitalist revolution has transformed its very essence. Renowned worldwide as a luxury leisure destination, its different regions cater to a wide range of visitors, but risk becoming isolated from each other. The Visitors' Guide to Nova Utopia accompanies the piece and is the best way of getting to know the island...

The London Sale at Christie's

A collection of fantastic London-related lots have been on display at Christie's South Kensington over the summer and went under the hammer this afternoon for The London Sale. There was a lot of interest in the room and online, and a real buzz to the proceedings, which saw Tobias Till's London A-Z achieve £10,000 and Stephen Walter's London Subterranea £7,500. We'd like to congratulate them both!

Other highlights included a double-decker Routemaster bus, which achieved £67,250, and Simon Patterson's 'The Great Bear' which featured in our Art of Mapping exhibition last year and fetched £25,000. We recommend looking through the full catalogue for a wonderful array of exhibits.

'My London' - Rob Ryan & Stephen Walter

We are delighted to have teamed up with Exposure Gallery to produce this exhibition of work by Rob Ryan and Stephen Walter, showing their own unique and beautiful perspectives of our capital city. Rob Ryan is exhibiting a selection of his delicate papercut works which poignantly blend love and melancholy. Stephen Walter shows a series of dense and intricate maps of London's boroughs deconstructed from 'The Island' - a huge map of London which took him 2 years to complete. Topographical truth and personal insights are carefully binded together in his work. You can visit at Exposure Gallery, 22 - 23 Little Portland Street, London, W1W 8BU until March 2.
